What does a day in the life of a Franchisee sound like?

Read Michael Holt’s story below. He’s our first ever franchisee and has built his business up over a number of years. He now has an adept team of staff and a turnover of £500k+.

It’s 05:00 hours and the kettle’s on for my first cup of tea, followed by a quick walk down to the seafront before starting my working day.

I then jump in the car and off to the office, listening to the news on the radio to catch up on world events. I arrive at my serviced offices at about 08:30 hours in the Liverpool Docklands and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet checking my emails and phone messages.

By now, it’s 09:00 hours and I phone my Area Manager, Mary Smith, to check if there are any issues from the previous day’s activities that haven’t been sorted or that need my involvement. Mary, who has been with Adept since the start of the business, is a very capable manager with great people skills. She assures me that everything is under control, something that I already knew but I like the personal touch and also letting my staff know how much I value their support.

I have an appointment at a college at 10:30 hours to carry out a cleaning survey after which I return back to the office and ask Janet, my administrator, to prepare the proposal.

Janet has excellent administrative skills and looks after the invoicing, purchase and sales ledger and is fully conversant with Sage Line 50. By now it is 11:30 hours and I have to call the head office to discuss some payroll and HR matters that I need clarified and also to give Alan Thomson the good news that I have just found out that I have won a new contract. I must say that I would be lost without the support that I get from Alan and his team.

By the time our brain storming session is over it is almost time for lunch and so, I go back home for a quick bite and spend about an hour with my wife and new born daughter.

The early part of the afternoon is then spent visiting existing clients and carrying out some quality checks. The one thing I have realised is that clients love the one to one contact though they may have already seen Mary the night before. I also enjoy meeting them because it helps build up a personal relationship and very often they will recommend me to other contacts that they may have.

I get back to the office at about 16:00 hours just before Janet leaves to catch up and sign any letters, cheques, make BACS payments, etc.

At 17:30 hours I leave the office to go to a site to see the supervisor at one of my contracts just to discuss a few minor issues that the client has raised and also to see the cleaning staff at that site. The other thing I have realised is that not only do clients like the personal touch but even the cleaners feel that they are appreciated if I make the effort to see them occasionally.

At 18:30 hours I head for home to see my wife, daughter and reflect on the events of the day and plan the next.
